DESCRIPTION

Having left Quebec two years ago, we now often think of it symbolically. One of the images that has come back to us is that of the "Tempo Garage" - a temporary shelter that creeps over the Quebec landscape with the coming of November. Tempo Garages are highly useful in protecting cars from having to be shovelled out of driveways during the long Winter. They have however also become part of Quebec culture. We take the Tempo structure as a point of departure to shelter explorations of nation and identity. Rather than duplicate the Tempo in its actual size, we have chosen to replicate it in miniature using the same materials as the Garage itself - tarp and steel. Each mini-Tempo houses objects and media which represent our memory of home, and put the viewer in dialogue with some of the questions of daily life in Quebec: Winter, language, sovereignty, ice.
